But before we go into the counselling part, let me explain what family and domestic violence and abuse is.

Exploring Domestic Violence

“Any behaviour that’s violent, threatening, controlling or intended to make you or your family feel scared and unsafe can be considered family and domestic violence.” There are different types of abuses, this can be physical, sexual, emotional, financial, stalking and or technology facilitated. The person aiming to take control usually exhibits behaviours to frighten and control his or her partner. In fact, he or she can physically harm the partner as well.

Anyone can be a victim of domestic and family violence. This does not involve any gender and usually involves unequal power dynamics to gain control over another person.

Domestic Violence and Its Types

There are various types of domestic violence. These include:
Physical and sexual abuse
The controlling individual will physically harm the partner through various acts such as hitting, kicking, slapping, pushing, choking, punching, or worse, using weapons. Similarly, the individual might force the partner into sexual acts and might even sexually assault her or him without consent. This can be directed at you, your children, other family members, friends, pets or property.
Emotional abuse
The individual will resort to intimidation and manipulation to obtain control over the partner. He or she might also perform verbal attacks, gaslighting or name-calling to achieve control.
Psychological abuse and stalking
Both of these are categorised under domestic violence since the individual will undermine his or her partner’s confidence, self-esteem and self-worth. At times, he or she might also stalk the partner as a type of fear-mongering to assert control.
Financial abuse
Another form of domestic violence that an individual faces is financial abuse where her or his partner limits them to work or use money.
Let us now take a look at some of the signs and symptoms of domestic violence.
